Relais de la Reine Hotel, near the Isalo National Park in Ankarana is one of the best hotels in Madagascar. Like a cross between a French farmhouse and a pretty fort, it’s hidden from the road and built of natural stone in and among the rocks. Rooms are in clusters of six, around a central courtyard, making a total of 30 in the main hotel with a further seven in the riding centre. Each simply furnished and decorated room has a fan and en suite loo, vanity and shower. The main reception, bar and dining room are spacious but on different levels. There is a very attractive and large swimming pool, tennis, riding, and ample walking opportunities from the hotel. The cuisine is traditional French and served on a terrace or in the lofty dining room with its central log fire. By popular demand, the family-run Relais de la Reine has recently been joined by a sibling – the splendid new Jardin de Roi is a stone’s throw away.
