Accommodation in Mozambique Home / Mozambique / Quirimbas Archipelago

Medjumbe Private Island | Mozambique

[Mozambique Hotels and Accommodation]
Medjumbe Private Island is situated in the pristine Quirimbas Island Archipelago, in the far northern reaches of Mozambique. The Quirimbas have been recognised by the cognoscenti as the world's best diving and fishing destination and consists of some 27 tiny islands. Medjumbe is on one such private island – a unique little island hideaway, perfect for those romantic getaways, for dedicated diving enthusiasts as well as those seeking a secluded island sanctuary. It is one of the more remote lodges, about 15 minutes by air from Matemo, 20 minutes from Ibo and 40 to 45 minutes by air from Pemba Airport. Luxurious accommodation consists of 13 well-spaced chalets, each with its own spa pool, as well as a restaurant and bar. Apart from the lodge, the island is completely uninhabited and is small enough to stroll around along the beach in an hour (only 18ha in size). However it is teeming with bird life, including the Black Heron. Activities include snorkelling and diving from the beach and from a boat. Other activities are kayaking, sailing, waterskiing and fishing with the opportunity of hooking a Marlin, sailfish, dogtooth tuna, mackerel, various species of kingfish and the infamous bonefish.

Ginny stayed there in May 2007:
"The 13 rooms are identical to those at Matemo Lodge but are furnished in a distressed azure blue and coral, with paler floors. This ‘beach hut meets Swahili’ decor makes it feel more relaxed and the smaller number of rooms makes it feel more intimate than Matemo, and of course it is more remote. The spacing of the rooms is greater and each now has a salt-water spa plunge pool. There is great snorkelling from the beach by the lodge plus other sites accessible by boat. Diving is extensive with coral banks, fringing reef and vertical walls to challenge advanced divers, with five sites to the north and six sites to the south. The Dive School has two instructors and the most popular courses are referral Open Water, Discover Scuba and Scuba Diver. A typical stay is 5 days or so."
