Accommodation in Namibia Home / Namibia / Central Highlands and Kalahari

Okonjima | Namibia

[Namibia Hotels and Accommodation]
Okonjima Bushcamp and Okonjima Main Lodge lie in the Omboroko Mountains in the central highlands about 2½ hours north of Windhoek en route to Etosha National park. Okonjima is home to the AfriCat non-profit project to preserve and rehabilitate large cats. Visitors can view and learn about them at close range in their natural habitat – perhaps track leopards in the rehabilitation area, radio-track cheetah on foot or visit the cheetah project. After dinner you can visit the hide to spot night creatures like caracal, porcupine or honey-badgers. The fascinating Bushman walking trail is also highly recommended.

Okonjima Bush Camp offers 8 spacious and attractively decorated en suite chalets, with a cosy seating area with day bed and mini-bar, a bedroom with views over the grasslands and dressing area. The secluded pool with shaded terrace is ideal for relaxing during the heat of the day.

Okonjima Main Camp has 10 en suite rooms nestled around a garden and swimming pool, pleasantly furnished in an African style. The ritzy new Bush Suite (2 rooms) and Villa (4 suites) afford space and flexibility for private groups and families.

Kate visited Okonjima Bush Camp in November:
"Bush Lodge has a very nice feel to it and we highly recommend it. As you come in to the lodge, you are elevated so that for your first impression, you immediately see the whole lodge and the grasslands beyond. To the left is the dining area, to the right is the sitting area with lots of small groups of chairs. It is a large space and well-designed so that you retain a sense of seclusion and peace. About 200 metres away is the swimming pool with lots of covered shade.

The rooms are well spaced so that you walk through the grasslands for a few minutes to get to your lodge. This is delightful as on a Namibian holiday you are often in your car with no chance to walk. The rooms are circular and spacious with a seating area with day bed and mini-bar, bedroom with views over the grasslands and behind the bedroom area is the dressing area and bathroom with shower and enclosed toilet. Very attractively decorated.

We definitely recommend a two night stay if possible because of all the activities on offer and also because this is such a lovely place to spend time in. If you stay for one night, you will experience leopard tracking on the first afternoon and visit the Africat clinic and the cheetahs on the following morning. If you are staying two nights, you also experience cheetah tracking on foot and can undertake the highly informative Bushman trail.

Main Lodge is the less expensive option and more traditional with smaller rooms all close together around a lawn. However there's a swimming pool and a large tea garden so that guests would be able to spread out for privacy."
