Leeuwenbosch Game Lodge, Amakhala Private Game Reserve | South Africa

[South Africa Hotels and Accommodation]
The 5000ha Amakhala Game Reserve, between Port Elizabeth and Grahamstown offers malaria-free game viewing in the Eastern Cape. ‘Amakhala’ is named after the Xhosa word meaning Aloes, the prolific indigenous plant found in this uniquely diverse province. Steeped in history and beauty, this game reserve creates an ideal environment for an unforgettable safari and an intimate experience of the varied landscape, including breathtaking views of the Bushman's River.

Within Amakhala are six independently owned lodges ranging from bush lodges to charming farm cottages to elegant country houses. Leeuwenbosch Game Lodge, is built around the original 1908 homestead. It offers convivial country hospitality with spacious comfortable en suite rooms and family suites amidst a beautiful garden. There are four en-suite bedrooms and a newly added family suite. Spend cheerful evenings in the old 1832 cellar pub or enjoy a quiet game of billiards on the full size antique table. Your hosts are the Fowlds family.

Leeuvenbosch is particularly known for its children’s safari programme aimed at younger children. Children under 6 may sleep on a sleeper couch in their parents room or have their own room. There's also a family suite which can sleep up to 2 children with parents. Children over 6 years can join the adult game drive but they also offer a children's safari programme for children under 6 (and older children if they wish to join.) There's also an outdoor play area with a jungle gym, trampoline and swings. The children’s programme includes activities such as baking, nature walks, a visit to a Xhosa Village and a child-orientated game drive.

More Detail on the Children’s Programme
On arrival the children receive a welcome pack which will include colouring fun, crayons, sweeties and other goodies. All children are invited to join them on an educational Nature Walk where they learn about the different plants and animals in the area, as well as searching for animal prints in the sand. Worksheets with pictures of the different birds and animals will be given out for the children to identify them and mark the sightings off on their sheets. They also visit real Xhosa homes and learning about the Xhosa culture and their way of life. (These are the actual staff housing on the reserve and not a fabricated village.) Children can learn and join in with traditional games the Xhosa children play. The children may prepare and bake biscuits. While waiting for the biscuits to finish baking the children will make animal masks. They can go on a mini game drive with the Game Ranger on their way to Amakhala's conservation centre. The game drive will not go up close to any dangerous game. At the conservation centre the children will have a chance to look and touch different animal bones. The children will go on a guided bird walk to try and identify the various local birds.
