Sindabezi Island | Zambia

[Zambia Hotels and Accommodation]
Sindabezi Island is part of Tongabezi Lodge and is a private island paradise on the Zambezi river, only 18km upstream of the Victoria Falls. Sindabezi Island sleeps only ten people, in five open fronted thatched chalets dotted around the shores of the island. The island is very rustic in style with no electricity, wood fires and hot bucket showers on demand. The unique design of the chalets allows you to enjoy all the sights and sounds of the river including regular visits from Horace, the resident hippo. At night, you will fall asleep in the glow of a hurricane lamp and in the morning you are woken by magnificent sunrises over the flood plains of the Zambezi river.

Your stay at Sindabezi Island begins with either a short boat ride from Victoria Falls or a guided canoe trip down the Zambezi river to the island. The main camp area is set on the sand and is the perfect place just to relax, unwind and simply enjoy the peace and tranquillity of this tiny island. You can still do all your activities as at the main Tongabezi lodge, but with an added 20 minute scenic boat transfer to and from Sindabezi.
The chances of spotting game from Sindabezi Island are very good as it is situated just across the water from Zimbabwe’s second largest national park. Elephant and hippp are often to be seen grazing on the nearby river banks as well as cavorting baboons and monkeys. One may even be lucky enough to hear the roar of distant lions – a sound you will never forget. There are also over two-hundred species of birds for bird- watching enthusiasts. Sindabezi Island is fully staffed and each member of staff acts not only as a host, but as a qualified guide, enhancing this unique African experience. Our guides will use their expert knowledge on all of the many inclusive activities that are available from Sindabezi. These include bird watching; fishing; game viewing; canoeing; boating; island lunches and picnics.
Sindabezi Island is ideal for families or a small party looking for complete privacy and is particularly good value. Indeed the island is the only bush camp that can be enjoyed exclusively as a private booking with its own private guide, boat and vehicle.

Kate stayed here in Sept 2006:
"Sindabezi Island was a particular favourite of mine. Imagine staying on a private island in the middle of the Zambezi river accessible only by boat from its sister lodge, Tongabezi. Sindabezi was one of UK Tatler magazine’s 101 Hot Places to Stay recently. It’s an enchanting location – very private and tranquil with lots of birdlife, grunting hippos and elephant activity to keep you company. There’s no electricity so your open chalet is lit by hurricane lanterns at night. I loved my romantic open-fronted chalet with nothing between my bed and the river except a wooden deck.
Sindabezi is very rustic in style with no electricity and hot bucket showers on demand (only 5 or 10 minutes wait). The chalets are open to the front with large rustic four poster beds swathed in mosquito netting and each has a separate toilet and an outdoor shower. In the morning you are woken by magnificent sunrises over the flood plains of the Zambezi river.

One of the great aspects of Sindabezi Island is that you can take the whole lodge for exclusive use so its ideal for families or a small party looking for complete privacy and is particularly good value, if taken this way.

I would also recommend combining one of two nights at Tongabezi Lodge or River Club with one or two nights here as the experience is completely different.

Despite my enthusiasm, Sindabezi would not suit everyone. Given the open nature of the chalets, it may not suit you if you are a little nervous or concerned about the small creatures of the African bush (bugs). As there is no electricity or swimming pool, I wouldn’t recommend it for the summer months (no fans) though your chalet would have cooling breezes at night."
