Deep in the game-rich Lower Zambezi National Park, Kulefu, meaning ‘the faraway place’, is a secluded, intimate safari camp settled comfortably in the deep shade of tall riverine trees. Profoundly peaceful, eco-friendly and well-appointed, the camp overlooks one of the permanent channels of the legendary Zambezi River. Here, after a thousand-mile journey, the sunlit river spreads out to form lush islands inhabited by crocodile, hippopotamus, and sacred ibis. Ancient oxbow lakes today provide a bountiful ecosystem for other resident wildlife.
The beautiful riverbank setting at Kulefu which offers excellent game opportunities, as the wildlife is concentrated in the land corridor between the steep escarpment and the river.
The camp has been recently refurbished giving it a sophisticated and luxurious feeling. Changes include the addition of a lovely riverside lounge nestled under the enormous acacia trees, a swimming pool and an evening fire pit sitting area on the banks of the river. Eight spacious tented rooms are on raised teak decks with twin beds or double beds, mosquito nets, solar heated water, private verandah and en-suite facilities with shower and bath tub looking out over the river.
The informal bar, lounge and dining area are housed in a magnificent central marquee, giving an open-air feel and harmonising with the surrounding environment. Beautiful teak furniture and natural fabrics add comfort and authenticity. At night time traditional paraffin lanterns illuminate pathways and tent entrances.
Discover Kulefu’s magnificent wildlife by boat, canoe, safari vehicle or on foot – or simply from the verandah of your own comfortable and very spacious tent. This is also an excellent area for bird-watching and star-gazing as well as fishing opportunities conducted on a catch and release basis. Access to Kulefu Tented Camp is by light aircraft to Jeki Airstrip. From Jeki, it is a one hour transfer by vehicle to the camp however these usually takes the form of a game drive and can take a few hours depending on game seen. |
