Botlierskop Private Game Reserve | South Africa

[South Africa Hotels and Accommodation]
Botlierskop Game Lodge - lies in the rolling bushveld close to George. Here you have an excellent chance of experiencing close encounters with rhino, lion, buffalo, giraffe, rare black impala amongst others in exhilarating open vehicle game drives, bush walks, quad bike rides and on horseback. 12 spacious tented suites lie in an extremely pretty setting, accessed by the river. Wooden steps up lead to your elegantly furnished tent with a soft colonial look with mahogany furniture, big oval stone bath, writing deck, minibar, telephone, leather suitcases and four poster beds. It’s very pleasant to lie on your sun lounger on the private wooden deck under the trees looking down onto the pretty river below and steeply wooded hills behind. Most of the tents have their own private jetties for guests to enjoy fishing opportunities. Traditional African dinners are served in an elegant thatched roof restaurant. Beforehand guests are entertained by African drummers around the camp fire. Quad bike drives are also offered - a stimulating mix of bush craft and exciting game viewing. If you love the smaller things in nature, guided bush walks amidst beautiful country are packed with information. Two hour horseback safaris through the reserve are also on offer.

Please note that Botlierskop is not an exclusive wilderness experience. Though it offers a good quality game viewing, their lions are newly established in the reserve and therefore separated from some wildlife such as the rare Black Impala. Also their elephants are rehabilitated elephants who are used to some human contact. However this means that families with children over six years should consider Botlierskop. The kids would be thrilled to see the lions and the elephants and there’ll be enough game to satisfy adults as well but it’s not a completely wild experience.

Kate visited in October:
"I liked Botlierskop but the trick is to decide whether it would suit your requirements. It is certainly the best of the ‘close to civilization’ game lodges in the Western Cape. It offers a good quality game experience and the accommodation is a real winner -12 luxury tents are accessed by the river in an extremely pretty setting. Wooden steps lead up to your beautifully furnished tent (colonial look - mahogany furniture, very spacious, big oval stone baths, writing deck, leather suitcases).

Game experience – Botlierskop offers the Big Five but it’s not a true wildlife experience as they are the first to admit. The lions are in a 100ha enclosure (which is large)and the elephants are tame so that they actually offer an elephant back safari as an optional extra. The rhino and buffalo are frequently seen by guests but of course the elusive leopard virtually never. They have lots of plains species and a breeding herd of black impala so you'll see quite a bit of game. Sonja felt that her game experience at Botlierskop left Madikwe Hills and Amakhala in the dust!

Who would enjoy Botlierskop? – Families would enjoy it. The kids would be thrilled to see the lions and the elephants and there is enough game to satisfy adults as well."
