Jack's Camp and San Camp | Botswana

[Botswana Hotels and Accommodation]
Jack's Camp is a stylish evocation of a classic 1940's safari camp, on the edge of the Makgadikgadi Pans - a unique and fascinating environment. This romantic camp is about as remote as you can get. Yet no visit to Botswana can be said to be truly complete without experiencing the desert as well as the delta.. Nine tents, complete with Persian carpets and paraffin lamps, are idyllically set on a tree and palm covered island in the vast golden grasslands. En suite facilities offer indoor and outdoor showers and flush toilets. The tents are well spaced for privacy and each has a covered porch with an expansive view across the pans. Dining is in the mess tent, or under the stars, whilst the tea tent, with cushions and even a wind-up gramophone, is ideal for decadent afternoon teas. This stylish camp offers you a holistic understanding of Botswana's wildlife, geography, geology and its people, both past and present.

After the rains (December to April), there can be enormous herds of Wildebeest, Zebra and Springbok (with the accompanying predators) on the open grasslands. Activities are conducted in 4x4 vehicles, custom designed to suit this terrain, by knowledgeable guides. Only in the dry winter months are all-purpose ATV vehicles (quad-bikes) available, allowing guests to visit the saltpans. (This activity takes place every 3rd day so a three night stay is recommended.) Walks with Bushman trackers, mornings spent with meerkats and visits to historical baobab trees used as camp sites by Livingstone and Selous are other activities.

Its Bedouin-style sister, the romantic 12 bedded San Camp, overlooks the endless white saltpans. 6 large walk-in white canvas tents on slightly elevated wooden platforms have private facilities (old world bucket showers and bush loos). This stylish camp offer a traditional safari experience - there is no electricity or running water.

Mr and Mrs D, UK stayed in August:
"Thank you for recommending this camp - an incredible and unforgettable experience. Please note that the highlight, quad biking to the salt pans, only takes place every third night now. Very luckily we did it on our first evening but we strongly recommend that you advise people to book for three nights. We absolutely loved the two hours we spent watching and walking with the meerkats - again unforgettable. Only 30 birds seen."
