Accommodation in South Africa Home / South Africa / Mpumalanga and the Kruger National Park

The Outpost | South Africa

[South Africa Hotels and Accommodation]
The Outpost was the first private concession in the Kruger Park and lies in the far northern Pafuri concession. It's accessible from the south, through the park, from Tzaneen or by air from Johannesburg. The Outpost's stylish contemporary architecture is surrounded by the bushveld. The lodge is set on a ridge and has panoramic views over this most beautiful part of the Kruger. This overwhelming sense of space is very effectively echoed by the minimalist approach of the lodge. Activities include game drives in open 4x4 safari vehicles, nature walks at times suitable to guests and full day excursions, with gourmet picnics, to Lanner Gorge and Crook's Corner. Combine The Outpost with a southern Big Five game lodge for a stunning bush experience.

The twelve rooms or 'spaces' are just that: huge elevated suites with three walls and one side completely open to the bush with no walls or glass windows to constrict you. (At night the 'spaces' can be enclosed with sliding canvas walls if you'd prefer not to be so open.) The furniture has been custom designed and the design is well-thought out.

Notes by Kate after a recent visit:
"It's one of those places you don't want to leave and it made a great impression on me. What I loved was the juxtaposition of minimalist lean lines of the architecture with the wildness of the surrounding bushveld. I adored being able to sleep in the open yet elevated for security and in a luxurious setting. It has one of those funky new open showers, (the ones that you have to look for because there is no obvious enclosed shower just a gently sloping floor to drain the water). The attention to detail is impeccable. The clothes unit, for example, slides into the wall for a clean cut contemporary look and yet slides out again to provide privacy in the bathroom area if required.
This is not as game-rich as the Kruger to the south though elephants, buffalo and lion, as well as general game include Tessebe antelope, are often spotted. Rather the focus at The Outpost is on enjoying the bush through game drives, walks and excursions."
