There are six tented rooms under a high canopied roof, each with a plunge pool and views over the baking plains. The design celebrates natural materials: spring water flows through the open-plan main lodge, feeds the central swimming pool and runs on to a watering hole. This triumph of zen was built and is run by Masai. Local guides specialise in game walks through a reserve of grassland, acacia woodland, papyrus swamp, glistening white salt pans and fig forest along the river, but you can also take night drives and visits to Lake Natron. Antelope, elephant, cheetah, giraffe, lion, ostrich, zebra and over 300 bird species are present.
